This month, parents and dentists alike take extra time to talk about the best ways to take care of Lovell\u2019s littlest smiles. Of course, two big questions parents often have are, \u201c<strong>When should I take my child to the dentist in Lovell for the first time? What should I expect during their first visit?<\/strong>\u201d Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lovelldental.com\/meet-our-dentist.html\">Dr. Lance Anderson<\/a> is going to answer both of these questions.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>When Should I Take Them to the Dentist the First Time?<\/h2>\n<p>Logic might tell you that you should schedule your child\u2019s first dentist appointment as soon as their first tooth appears, but that may actually be too soon. The American Dental Association recommends that your child should have their first dental appointment\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.colgate.com\/en\/us\/oc\/oral-health\/life-stages\/childrens-oral-care\/article\/when-to-take-a-child-to-a-dentist-for-the-first-time-0113\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>6 months after their first tooth has erupted, or by their first birthday<\/strong><\/a><strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>This means you don\u2019t need to rush\u00a0after they get their first tooth. If you bring them in too early, they simply won\u2019t have enough dental structure for\u00a0your kid\u2019s dentist in Lovell\u00a0to examine. However, if your child doesn\u2019t have any teeth by the time they turn 1, you should bring them in as well.<\/p>\n<h2>What Will Their First Visit Be Like?<\/h2>\n<p>Your child\u2019s first visit to Lovell Dental has much less to do with treatment than trying to make them feel comfortable in our office. We actually call it a <strong>happy-check, <\/strong>and it\u2019s specifically for patients aged 1-3 who have never been to our practice before. These initial visits are very important to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/pediatric-first-dental-visit\" target=\"_blank\">help your child establish a positive connection to going to the dentist<\/a>, so it\u2019s best to start slow. It will mostly involve your child walking around the office so they can become familiar with it, as well as meet their doctor and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lovelldental.com\/meet-our-team.html\">their team<\/a>. Afterward, you\u2019ll talk with Dr. Anderson about your child\u2019s medical history and any other observations\u00a0you&#8217;ve made\u00a0that might be relevant to their dental health.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll also discuss their basic oral hygiene, why it\u2019s important, how their diet affects their teeth, and developmental milestones you should look for. This will help you monitor your child\u2019s\u00a0growth, as well as get them thinking about taking care of their teeth.<\/p>\n<p>During this visit, Dr. Anderson will perform a short oral exam and advise you on what\u00a0to\u00a0do moving forward. After this first visit, you should bring your child in every 6 months for a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lovelldental.com\/preventive-dentistry.html\">standard check-up and cleaning<\/a>, just like yourself.
